Coffee & Content - Production Design Tips for Directors & How to Make a Cinematic Short Film

Here's hoping you had a healthy and creative week. First up, our friends over at Studio Binder have done it again. Filmmaking is a very visual medium, and the director is responsible for making sure all elements from cinematography to actor's performances work together in the frame to create a seamless final visual triumph. In this particular video, Studio Binder talks about the importance of directing and understanding production design. 

Next up, let's talk about the power of short films, shall we? It is becoming more and more common for filmmakers to use short films as a proof of concept in the hope to make a feature. Filmmaker, photographer, and YouTuber Peter McKinnon has put together a great video on how to make a short film cinematic. Peter takes you through his own short film, Deliver a Feeling, as a case study on how to use cinematography, sound design, and editing to curate a masterfully cinematic short. 

Speaking of short films - if you currently have a completed 3-23 minute short film, consider submitting to our 5th Annual Stage 32 Short Film Contest - final deadline is this Wednesday, April 8th at Midnight. Winning films become official selection at the Oscar-qualifying Hollyshorts Film Festival, Austin Film Festival, and the Raindance Film Festival in London. Additionally, winning films are screened online to Stage 32's network of 500+ agents, producers, distributors, financiers, and development executives. We look forward to seeing your films!
