Been woodshedding scary movies and scores looking at what makes the scares truly scary (at least on first viewing). I ended up in the way-way back machine. So, here’s a shout-out to the spooky films OG Val Lewton, who just may be the originator of the false jump-scare! Here it is from the 1942 banger, Cat People! (Hint: the lack of score really sells it!)
