What Matters Most In A Score?

I was pondering today why I love scores so much. Sure, I love the big ending songs and the way they encapsulate the entire story line-- and let's be real- it takes musical genious to encapulate an entire series, movie, or franchise with a single song... but what about all of those other things that happen along the way? The little snippets of score that help the audience fully buy in and join the moment?

I never really understood just how much I loved the scoring process until we did our Short proof of concept. I worte it, my daughter starred in it, and it was awesmome AND incomplete. Next, we brought in two of my sons to begin scoring. Sitting and playing the short over and over on the screen and trying different moods, different chord progressions, different lyrics-- it's when the magic really happened, and when our film came to life. Only people in this room would probably understand the ba-gillion iterations it took just to score our little 7 minute movie.

Can't wait to do it again with the feature :) What about you? What have you observed in scores or in scoring movies?

PS Our oldest son did all of the Key Art & photography and my aweseome husband was Crafty and Catering for the day :)

Maurice Vaughan

I think the buildup in a score is important, Libby Wright! And it's one of my favorite things about a score.

Yes- and it's so underrated in my opinion Maurice Vaughan !

Ashley Renee Smith

This is such a wonderful reflection, Libby Wright. I completely agree, it’s those subtle cues and emotional undercurrents in a score that truly bring a story to life. I love that your whole family was involved in the process. What a beautiful collaboration!
