3 Questions

  1. Does your process for composing music change when you are working on a specific project as opposed to creating music for yourself?

    2. Does the music that first inspired you still inspire you?

    3. After you have just composed your favorite piece of music (of all time), where would you most like it to

I love the third question the most for myself now, cause I am now thinking about - I just released my new album (yesterday :)) and I am thinking about arranging it to make it as something real and beautiful for concert, cause you still can do everything if you can make live concert right :)

Julien Ober

When I compose for myself, it's more intuitive, freer. Conversely, when it's for an album or a film, it's more structured because the music composed must tick certain boxes. As for inspiration, I refe...

From Juilliard to Stand-Up: Isabel Hagen is Redefining What it Means to Be a Modern Composer

This is a story that hits all the right notes, literally.

Comedian, violist, writer, and now filmmaker Isabel Hagen has never fit neatly into one box, and that’s exactly what makes her journey so inspiring. In this Deadline article, she opens up about her background as a classically trained musician...

Getting work tips

Hello all! So I'm a Production Veteran who has worked in almost all aspects of Film Production. I have also been a composer (for myself) for decades, and I'm getting my portfolio together and creating new website dedicated to such. I have been watching endless amounts of YouTube videos, trying to le...

What’s the most unusual sound you’ve ever worked into a piece of music?

I'm not sure I've used anything really unusual in my pieces, but my children sure have. So, it got me wondering... what about you?

New Stage32 Profile

The new Stage32 profile update is awesome. I would urge everyone to update their profile.

Maurice Vaughan

You're right, Navid Lancaster. It is awesome. Hope you're doing well!

Julien Ober

I'm sure this is great, but unfortunately I can't update my information. When I try to search for a block, the site gives me an error and asks me to try again without telling me what the problem is.

Demo reels on tap

Hey composers. Who's got convenient URL/sites they can point me to for quick perusals of their demos? I'm especially looking forward to hearing some huge, orchestral, inspiring, minor key stuff along the lines of Hans Zimmer, Howard Shore, Ennio Moriconi, John Williams, Philip Glass, Jerry Goldsmith.

Morgan Aitken

Dylan Lee , lots of driving beat. Great for game soundtracks. Longing for Winter is a nice track.

Any creative wins this week?

What’s one thing you created (or overcame) this week that you’re proud of? Maybe you started a new cue, finished a mix, or just kept showing up when it wasn’t easy. Let’s give the little (or big) things the credit they deserve. They’re what keep us going.

Share your win—big or small—below :)

What’s your go-to instrument?

For me, it’s the piano. Always has been. What’s the one instrument you turn to when words won’t do?

Julien Ober

Mainly piano, but it depends on the mood. If I have a specific idea of what I want to write (for an album for example), I can directly write for a specific instrument.

Kat Spencer

That's really cool Julien Ober!

Morgan Aitken

The triangle! LOL Rutger Oosterhoff 2 - I'm imagining a concerto for Triangle and Orchestra in B# major.

Brian Gunter

Can't say that I have a "go-to" instrument. Depends very much on mood or demands of a brief.

Where Do You Find Your Songwriting Inspiration?

For me, inspiration is absolutely everywhere—and often in the weirdest places.

I once saw a sign that said Lake Happy… and somehow my brain twisted that into Camp Happy Waters, which then became Happy Horror Days, a totally off-the-rails horror parody song sung by a clueless boy band.

I also reimagin...

I sat down at the piano, and accidentally started writing a song...

And I immediately said, “Oops.”

Not because I hit the wrong note.

But because I stumbled onto a song—real inspiration—and my first thought was, “No, not today.”

Why?

Because producing it would take more time than I have right now.

And if I start writing it, I will finish it. That’s just how I’m wired.

But...

I dream of being able to spend my time solely on writing and producing. But there are so many other things I have to manage on the side!

Kat Spencer

Julien Ober I hear that! How much time do you get to spend on writing and producing now?

Julien Ober

Kat Spencer Currently 10 hours/day. But since I don't earn enough money from these activities, I'm forced to take a job on the side from time to time, which greatly reduces my production time to 2/3 hours/day.

Sometimes the best use of a film score is not to use it

JAWS has one of the greatest film scores ever; instantly recognizable and key to the film's success. But one of the film's (and cinema's) best and most famous jump scares works because Williams didn't use any music for that particular moment.

Take a look:
