Some Songs Weigh More Than Others

When I wrote Broken Glass Symphony, it carried decades of my life with it. For 32 years, my life has been directly intertwined with Jewish life and causes—even though I am a gentile. I spent years working to establish the Jewish library in Vilnius, and along the way I often found the weight overwhel...

I agree with you, music has an amazing ability to balance emotional state. And it doesn't matter whether you listen to it or it's born within you.

Wyman Brent

Chris Stefans, you are right. I only recognized my songwriting ability in April of this year. In that time, I have written more than 400 songs. Some make me think, some cry, and some laugh....

From Poems in a Drawer to a Rock-Novel

Hi everyone! I’d love to share a project I’ve been working on that experiments with form and audience experience.

For almost 30 years I was writing poetry, always dreaming of turning those words into songs. I’ve always loved rock’n’roll, blues, and classic rock. In my youth, I was deeply influenced b...

Inspiration Strikes

Where do songs come from? For me, inspiration can arrive from just about anywhere — sometimes in ways that make no sense at all until the song is finished.

A two-word prompt can spark a full track.

A misread line in a book turns into a chorus.

A 75-year-old comic book or a 100-year-old patent applicati...

Composing for a Sex/Love Scene

I know it's a little bit of a cheeky subject, but I've been working on a feature recently that has unbelievable amounts of sex scenes and it got me thinking, 'how many love scenes have you composed in the past?' The answer is one. One love scene previously!

Love/sex scenes are peculiar because we get...

When it comes to composing for intimate or love scenes, the music has to feel natural and not forced — too much and it becomes cheesy, too little and the mood is lost. That’s why I think inspiration o...

Hmmm... that's one I've never composed for. Seems like most of those scenes are instrumental. Why do you think that is?

Joel Irwin

imho because words being sung or spoken in a love scene would detract from the action of the scene. Though I am sure there are many scenes in particular love scenes that act as final scenes that are "outro scenes" to the end titles.

What Comes First—Melody, Theme, or Mood?

When you’re scoring a scene or developing music for a project, what’s your starting point?

Do you begin by crafting a central melody or motif? Do you focus on the emotional tone and build the instrumentation from there? Or do you take your cue from the visuals, cutting the music to match the rhythm a...
