Mel Gibson Praises Ridley Scott’s ‘Gladiator’ as ‘Spiritually’-Affecting ‘Without Being Overt’

“I’m pretty average at most things, but I’m good at a couple of things. I know how to tell a story on film, I know how to do that,†said Gibson. “That’s a weird place to be, but I think a lot can be achieved by art and image and you can convey a lot without actually having to say it. You can do things to affect people emotionally or spiritually even without being overt.â€

The shot he references is the opening shot of Gladiator, which we can all probably recall; the hand stroking the wheat as a man walks through a field, the music too.

When I first saw it, it had an effect on me, one of an overwhelming sense of presence. How about you? How does Scott affect people with a simple camera sequence?
