Financing / Crowdfunding : Global Film Production Tax Incentives by Geoff Hall

Global Film Production Tax Incentives

I’ve just watched a presentation by Olsberg - SPI, about Global Tax Incentives, via Screen International.

There was a lot of data flying around, so the best way of doing this is to give a link to the report.

The presenter, Joe Stirling Lee, also spoke about it being recognised nationally, that there’s a need for a healthy film eco-system. That’s why tax incentives are becoming more prominent.

Joe spoke as well, about the recognition for workforce development and we know that Stage32 is ahead of the curve for that one, with the Certification Courses.

I hope you find the report helpful.

Richard "RB" Botto

Fantastic share, Geoff Hall. Next week, Stage 32 will have a heavy presence at Focus, where all the commissions will be pushing their incentives and rebates and selling filmmakers on the "Why" of shooting in their regions. The competition in this arena is fierce and only continuing to grow. As you mentioned, the issue is the supporting workforce in each area and whether it's additive or prohibitive.

Sam Sokolow

Richard "RB" Botto is spot on. Most regions that have a tax incentive still only have 1 or maybe 2 quality crews. To maximize the opportunities that tax incentives bring, and to cultivate a healthy local language prodiction community, workforce development and building a strong crew base is the game. I was just on a call with a producer this morning who literaly said that he was considering shooting a film in a location that had a robust incentive but lamented that traveling his crew there would eat the whole incentive up. Investing in your people is as important as investing your people's money in an Apple production.

Sam Sokolow Richard "RB" Botto Thanks RB and Sam, I’m looking forward to Focus in London. I’m already making connections with various international production companies and film commissions for a slate of projects, as well as with the UK’s Global Screen Fund, with Seeing Rachel in mind. It should prove to be an interesting day.

Jack Binder

Great share, thanks Geoff. Good doc with overviews and details.

Geoff Hall

Jack Binder you are very welcome, Jack.

This is great, Geoff Hall -- a really detailed deep dive. Filmmaking is truly a global enterprise and it has been for at least the past 30-50 years. All the classic movies shot at Elstree Studios in the UK come to mind.
