What Beginning Filmmakers Should Know About Financing

Financing is one of the most intimidating parts of filmmaking, but it doesn’t have to stop you from creating. In this insightful interview, filmmaker Anthony DiBlasi (Last Shift, Dread) breaks down the many paths to getting your film funded and what he’s learned from years in both studio and independent production.

DiBlasi discusses:

• The difference between studio financing, private equity, and crowdfunding

• How relationship-based funding works through markets like AFM and Berlin

• Why shorts and proof-of-concept films are smart investments for early-career filmmakers

• The risks of self-funding a feature

• Why getting distribution at all is already a huge win

He emphasizes that filmmaking is as much about persistence and positioning as it is about funding and that the right short film can open doors a feature might not.

Filmmakers: What’s been your biggest lesson or “aha” moment when it comes to financing your projects? Have you found one strategy that’s worked best for you?

Maurice Vaughan
