Introduce Yourself : Hello everyone by Matthew Karram

Matthew Karram

Hello everyone

I'm a writer, teacher, composer, conductor, and musician currently based in South Florida. I am working on a screenwriting certificate through NYU and have had some early good feedback from film festivals and evaluations.

I've focused on fantasy features and pilots. I have four scripts in the works and I look forward to being a part of this Stage 32 community and seeing what everyone is doing.

Fantasy is one of my favorite genres to write. What's one of your favorite things about writing Fantasy?

Matthew Karram

I grew up reading, watching, and interacting with fantasy, so it's one of the genres I'm most familiar with. I also find that it allows for different avenues for exploring themes and situations, since the reader/audience member is not tied to strictly interpreting through a realistic lens. Sometimes sending yourself or your reader out of the ordinary helps the story break through in a more impactful way. I also enjoy being able to build a world that changes the way a character would interact or respond to situations.

You're right, Matthew Karram. "Sometimes sending yourself or your reader out of the ordinary helps the story break through in a more impactful way." World building is one of my favorite things about writing Fantasy. Do you come up with rules, technology, etc. for your worlds?

Matthew Karram

I try to think of what the major difference for the world is, then come up with the rules/technology that would follow from that.
