Some days ago Selma Karayalcin prompted an interesting discussion about the best tools to promote as a writer. I think that a website is usually not worth it unless writers are willing to invest a lot of time and money to turn it into a real marketing tool.
Yet, there's something similar, a mix between a newsletter, a website and a social (and it's free): Substack.
More and more often, writers are moving to Substack to stay in touch with their audience and expand it. What's different from other newsletter platforms is that here readers can leave comments and browse the archive of old posts. It could even become a source of income by activating paid membership.
I've an account there, but I've never really used it. I already have 2 social profiles, a blog and a newsletter, and I'm hesitant to open another channel.
I'd love to read your experiences with Substack: have you ever used, as a reader or writer? What are your thoughts about?

I am in the same boat. I've been toying with the idea of writing more frequently there. I have written a few things, but the dedication it owuld take would be quite a lot (I think you'd need to post a proper article-length piece 3x a week, and post at least once daily to really make an impact.) Do I have time for that? Not really... But maybe occasionally posting will eventually build up. I see it more as a content creation thing right now... but maybe one day I will give it the attention it would require.

Exactly, Ronika Merl: I'm afraid the mechanism behind this is similar to that of social media. By the way, this is also why I love Stage 32: it's possible to connect and network without being overwhelmed by constant content creation.

Chiara Torrisi, I have used Substack as a reader. I have thought about setting up on there as someone who posts. Just that I am so active now with Stage 32, Linkedin and Facebook. I am afraid my brain might explode if I add any more. Howeve, I would love to know what you think.

I have heard of, but have never used, Substack. I have yet to build an audience lol. I will likely expand my social media presence when (and if!) my writing gains wider traction. Right now, just focusing on writing and networking.

This is a common struggle, Wyman Brent: many channels have potential, but staying active on everyone is impossible. Being active on 3 platforms seems a reasonable effort.

Michael Dzurak I've written that posting on social media should not make writers forget to write, so it's important to find a balance

I'm kinda with Chiara Torrisi with this one - trying to keep up with the social etc keeps me from writing - and that's why I'm here. I'm learning about Substack... but I'm learning about everything. Still very green over here!
