The 2025 Oscar nominations have sparked discussions with several unexpected omissions and inclusions. Notably, Angelina Jolie (Maria) and Nicole Kidman (Babygirl) were absent from the Best Actress category, despite their acclaimed performances. Similarly, Selena Gomez (Emilia Pérez) and Daniel Craig (Queer) were overlooked in the acting categories. On the other hand, Monica Barbaro secured a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her role in A Complete Unknown, and the screenplay for Nickel Boys earned a Best Adapted Screenplay nod.
These surprises highlight the unpredictable nature of awards season and the diverse range of performances and films being recognized this year.

I think Margaret Qualley earned a nomination for Best Supporting Actress in THE SUBSTANCE, Ashley Renee Smith. And I think the snubs are a reflective of the competitive landscape this year.

It's always hard to read the tea leaves when the nominations are announced but it is quite a competitive year and the Academy members seem to be supporting some new talent and creatives associated with films that had unique perspectives. I love Nicole Kidman's work - she's otherworldly talented - and Babygirl was an intense film but she has played those melodies a few times in the last 5 years to degrees. Maria was a tour de force for Jolie but very much a one-woman show IMPO so perhaps if the film, itself, was more accessible or lauded her performance would have recieved more active attention from voters. But that's just Monday morning quarterbacking - the Best Actress category is stacked with brillaince. I thought Selena Gomez was amazing in Emilia Perez and deserved a nom - certianly over Ariana Grande, who was very good in Wicked but not Oscar worthy when stading next to Cynthia Erivo, who was totally Oscar worthy. The techincal categories are also stacked. I can't wait to see the envelopes opened!!!
