How to Find Work as a Production Assistant Webinar

Traditional crew positions on Hollywood sets are not advertised, they are found through relationships and networking. To become an employed PA requires patience, diligence, and personal organization. To acquire jobs in the movie business is an amorphous process with no right way to do it and no two journeys the same. In this webinar you will learn the tangible skills you can employ to find work with a forward momentum carrying you towards the next job.

Many filmmakers try to rely just on sending out emails blindly to get work but film sets can be tight, often PA positions are filled through direct connections and PA jobs are in demand so you have to be persistent and often make a personal impression. Networking and having a defined system of identifying jobs, applying to them and following up is crucial. If you have any kind of personal referral you are steps ahead of many and it is possible to find these even if you are just getting started. After getting the first job, it is important to also have your sites set on the next one and with proper organization, planning, and follow ups; one can strategically time meetings to occur as one job closes so that another one opens up immediately thereafter.

Starting as a PA is a right of passage for so many. Set PA is one of the only jobs that interacts with every department, so an awesome job to get experience on. One of my first PA jobs was on a movie filming in Minneapolis during winter and my first night I had to lock up traffic a half a mile away from where the shot was - it was like -10 degrees - what I would given for a sound blanket that night.

Thank you to everyone who attended today!!

Had to use a calculator to get the math right. My first taste of the film business happened 58 years ago as a Go-for (before PA days) by being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Breaking into the industry as a production assistant can be tough, but networking and staying open to opportunities is key. A great way to start is by looking for urgent job postings in film and media, as productions often need last-minute help. I came across this link that lists various job openings, including in Saudi Arabia. It might be worth checking out if you're open to working internationally. Also, don’t underestimate the power of social media and film forums—many gigs come through word of mouth.
