They do this in the form of predatory agreements that do not benefit the filmmaker (high expense caps / recoupment fees, unreasonably long terms, etc). I'd suggest checking out. Then, you can look up companies people refer your way and see the experiences other filmmakers had with the company.

Hi Nick Eff (Mandlamadi) - I was taken by the news about The Fithian Group launching "Attend", which marries indie films with theaters without studios in the middle.
