I only recently started writing while listening to music. My writing partner, Megan, makes playlists customized by project or sequence mood. It helps us focus on the pace of action and dialogue. Today’s playlist for this character intro sequence includes “(It Goes Like) Nanana” from Peggy Gou’s album I HEAR YOU.
What’s everybody listening to? Do you write with music or something else?

I mainly write without music, Kelly Anelons, but sometimes I'll listen to movie scores, instrumentals, jazz, and music by Stage 32 members.

Maurice Vaughan oooooooo other stage32 members’ music?! What an awesome idea for writing and supporting community. How do you find their music?

I meet composers and musicians in the Introduce Yourself Lounge and during Introduce Yourself Weekend, Kelly Anelons. They put links to the music in their intro/reintro posts.

My brother is an Academy Award-nominated screenwriter (who has taught for Stage 32) and he always makes a playlist to write to. To your point, Kelly Anelons - he says it really helps him stay in the tone and period of the story and characters. He swears by it. I ask him for the playlist now when I read any new script of his to see what inspired him. It's very cool.

I write with music. I have general playlists that I listen to based on whether the project I'm writing is more upbeat or more serious. I also have a few playlists that are specific to the projects themselves.

There are some projects I've done where I'd create a playlist that fits the tone of the story I'm writing at the moment. 99 percent of the time it won't even be added into the script but it's a good reminder to not get off track

I write with Spotify. I have my own playlists mostly with the oldies, 50s, 60s and 70s. On edits, I listen to writing instrumentals and sometimes theme songs from popular movies. I don't know what it is, it makes me think better. Go figure!

Like a few people here I like to listen to music without lyrics. I'm a big jazz nut and most of it is instrumental so that's perfect for me.

I rarely write with music playing because I love music so much that I get wrapped up in it. I'll occasionally play instrumental music when I write as it's less distracting.

Thom Reese Yeah, getting wrapped up in the music can lead to off key singing sessions with very bad choreography. Sometimes it cannot be stopped! Instrumental is a good alternative.
