I am new to this business and have come across some of these online contests. Are they legit and how do you protect your work? I had one issue with a certain company and they did not comply with their virtual service and the payment to enter the contest compromised. Is it worth to enter your script in one of these contest? Please advise.
Most of the contests are online, legit and not so legit. There are plenty of good and valid contests to enter and some that aren't. Which one are you referring to?

If you've been TOLD your script is good then I say enter them. BLuecat, Nicholl, Page, I'm sure the others have listed many more. But make sure your work is up to par. You don't want to throw away 40 bucks on a script that wasn't ready.
very well said. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Annie - I would echo Ron's comments about the Nicholl fellowship. Ditto Jean-Pierre's mention of BlueCat and Page. The Creative World Awards contest is also entirely legit - I've had good experiences with them, particularly in terms of the detail, clarity and applicability of the coverage/notes their readers give.

not sure if anyone mentioned this filmfreeway withoutabox these two services will put you in touch with official contests and festivals. filmfreeway tells you how old a festival/contest is. you might reason that a brand new contest is not worth entering... because they haven't established a reputation. there would be exceptions to this assumption. and a festival/contest that has been around forever might have too many submissions... you might get lost in the shuffle or there might be politics behind the selections.

Yes, there are many good top contests that are legit. Nicholl is one of the top ones (I placed in the top 1% one year and my script went on to be produced/distributed). Final Draft Big Break is another great one. Others not so much. Read the fine print before you enter. Some claim rights to development if you win their little prize. http://scriptcat.wordpress.com/2011/08/09/screenwriting-contests-are-the...
