An awkward Cherokee teen boy who struggles with his new life on the reservation heals his wolf-friend, who turns into a naked teen girl - a spirit guide to help him adjust. A teen coming-of-age family fantasy!
SYNOPSIS:
Imagine a stuttering teen boy, DAKOTA (15,) who is like me - new to being a Native American. His white adoptive family returned him to his biological father on the reservation, and he's having trouble fitting in at the elite Cherokee high school - which is my theme of acceptance.
The only one he can talk to is his red wolf friend. He tells CHANDRA (the wolf) about the fiery-redhead girl, RIANA (17), who thinks her dad is Ed Sheeran and how he wants to ask her to the prom and maybe kiss her. While gathering herbs one morning, he spots the rare twin huckleberry. He tells Chandra that her stalking is getting better and when he smells the plant and starts to taste, Chandra attacks him.
We then learn a little more about Chandra the wolf and realize that this story of Chandra and Dakota is being told to a group of library kids by Dakota's Grandma Enola - a gifted storyteller. One of the parents is alarmed, "
Getting back to Chandra's attack, Riana's mother, AMBER (30s) shoots Chandra and later, after Dakota takes her into a cave for the night and heals her - POOF! - she's Chandra (the teen girl, 18) - naked and gorgeous. Who wouldn't want that? Can he keep her? Those three lead CHARACTERS, the naked wolf/girl, the teen boy, and the wolf-hating prom girl, form our teen love triangle similar to Twilight. The fourth main character is Dakota's cousin - WAYA (15,) a Two-Spirited (gay) bundle of energy and joy - like an excited new puppy.
Although a teen fantasy horror, the tone is also funny because inside, Chandra's a wolf – confused by things in our modern world like a blender, microwave, and high school mean girls. The plot is driven by his goal to make her more human-like and hide their wolf clan's secret with conflict as she needs him to be the "alpha male" to be a better mate for making "puppies." There are also the ranchers and prom girl, Riana, who want to kill the wolves and our naked girl's wolf family that redefines the horror of meeting the parents. But they help him learn the classic wolf-on-man basketball defense by nipping at his heels. My favorite moments are when Chandra shows up at high school with the bra/panties on the outside of her clothes - and, of course, the cat-eating scene when he yells at her, "I said you can eat anything IN the refrigeration - not on top of it!" Spoiler alert - the cat lives! Chandra heals it. Towards the end, we have another twist - the redhead wolf-hating girl, finds out who her real father is - and it's not Ed Sheeran - it's a wolf!
In the final scenes, we’re tricked into thinking that Chandra is going to kill Riana - paving the way for her mate with Dakota and remaining human. But that is a fake resolution, as the she-wolf has merely rigged up a net of balloons to help Dakota ask Riana to the prom. Dakota gains his confidence from Riana’s “yes” and kisses her - deeply! He has made a huge character arc - from a stuttering, shy boy into a confident teen who is able to tell his adoptive parents that he wants to stay with his biological dad on the reservation - and, of course, able to kiss Riana. He's even able to tell his new dad, Sam, that he wants to be a holistic healer and not a "real doctor."
It has a Hollywood ending with another twist – we think Chandra has chosen to return to be a wolf and rejoin her wolf family, because her job as a spirit guide is done. Chandra and she and her friend, Dakota, say goodbye, but as the storyteller tells us - that is not the real ending...Chandra did come back, and now she and Dakota have a “puppy.”
