An ambitious and focused newly appointed Vice President doesn't want anything to get in her way on the road to the White House, but when she reunites with her college sweetheart, she struggles to decide if our country is ready for a former pro baseball player with opposing political views as our unconventional next First Gentleman.
SYNOPSIS:
The country has never been so divided. In my marriage, one of us is a Republican, and the other is a Democrat. If my script can show two people with opposing views from different backgrounds – but who are deeply in love - make it, then there is hope for our country. We need stories with heart. I write smart female character-driven stories with heart.
Characters and Plot Summary - We have three main characters. ANNA RHODES (40), a US Senator, who starts out on the "short list" of being appointed VP after working tirelessly fundraising for the party. She's a liberal and passionate about improving things for her fellow Native Americans. JAKE (40s,) is an injured major league ballplayer who has just been "sent down" to the minors during rehabilitation. Although accustomed to the limelight and scores of love affairs, Jake is totally unprepared for seeing Anna again. WILMA (20s,) was named after Wilma Mankiller, the first female chief of the Cherokee Nation, and she's Anna's "chief" - assistant, best friend, and confident - and fiercely loyal warrior. She doesn't approve of Jake and is in constant conflict with Anna – and Jake.
After we meet our characters, the A-story begins at the inciting "meet cute" moment after the setup that Anna has to take a last-minute shower in the locker room before throwing out the first pitch at a minor league baseball game. Jake skips warm-ups to soak his shoulder and happens upon Anna, but they fall into a naked mess until "watchdog" Wilma tries to protect her screaming boss and adds to the photographer's picture of a wild threesome. Later, out on the field, In another setup, Jake takes a moment to instruct Anna on how to best throw the ball to reach the plate and not embarrass herself. Anna surprises Jake with a full wind-up pitch that fires across the plate but connects with his "private parts." Ouch!
We're all surprised at how quickly sparks fly between these two, with only a hint at a previous history - but it's revealed – that they were deeply in love in college and the real father of Anna's daughter. This explains why Anna and Jake; who have very little in common, have so much chemistry and passion, but she's a liberal, and he's a gun-toting rich Republican. Anna's internal struggle revolves around her personal family relationships with her daughter and Jake - conflicting with her own ambitions. Her external struggle is the road to the White House, and is Jake "baggage" that she needs to leave behind?
The TONE is grounded comedy at times. After Jake gives up his room to a teammate, Anna mistakes the girl who answers his hotel door for a groupie, and tempers flare as Anna leaves Jake standing naked in the hotel. The B-story is the President's involvement in the scandal that forced the VP to resign and enabled Anna's appointment. Conflict comes from misunderstandings involving Jake, like when he shoots a deer that had been hit by a car, and it comes out that he's hunting out of season and when it is rumored that he will sign with the Marlins - abandoning Anna's dreams for his own. There's a funny montage of Anna and Jake on the campaign trail and some funny moments, mostly physical comedy.
A surprising ending with a physiological victory when Anna decides the appearances don't matter - she's in love with Jake. Anna exits the plane, with Jake at her side - but two steps back as he's been instructed by the bulldog, Wilma. But then - a final twist - the President was also involved in the scandal - and resigned, and we have a bookend last scene as Anna is the new president and Jake is “all in.
