An insecure autistic woman navigates the emotional turbulence of her fiancé’s volatile sister while bonding with his family during a life-changing camping trip.
SYNOPSIS:
Cali, an autistic woman who occasionally suffers from meltdowns, has arranged to go on a trip with her fiancé, Heath, and his family in their camper van. Her father, Markus, takes her to meet Heath and his parents, Ariana and Gerald. Cali is then introduced to Persephone, Heath's divorced sister, and her daughter, Marietta, who both join the camper van crew.
Whilst travelling around England, Cali befriends Marietta, Ariana and Gerald but Persephone bullies her to the point of triggering one of her meltdowns. Cali sleeps with Heath for the first time after Persephone makes her doubt his devotion. She worries that she should have waited but Ariana reassures her with a confession about her and Gerald's youth.
Persephone starts to feel like she's being pushed out of the family, so she invites Cali for a girls night out. Whilst drunk, Persephone lets Cali see her more vulnerable side and admits that Heath is lucky to have her. This softer side also shows when Marietta almost drowns in the Peak District's Blakemere Pond, causing Persephone to realise that she needs to stop taking her family for granted.
Towards the end of the trip, the family visits Wells Cathedral where Cali has an unusually intense meltdown that seemingly comes out of nowhere. Despite this, she tells Heath that she wants to get married at Wells. The family meets Markus at Stonehenge and he takes Cali home to arrange the wedding.
Cali and Heath get married a few months later and leave for their honeymoon in the camper van.
