About Kathaleen

Kathaleen is a self-taught screenwriter who visualizes and re-writes scenes in her head until she’s satisfied with the “whole” before she starts writing. She started writing in college while attending USC Dental School and coming across Syd Field's how-to book in book store. Her first attempt led to winning the Writer's Guild East Award for new writers and being offered a mentor - William Kelly who had just gained fame for being one of the writers on Witness. He did not care for her script or the following scripts she wrote, although his partner, Linda Seger, author of "How to Make Good Scripts Great" did. It turned out a good thing because Kathaleen learned a lot of good stuff from Linda who is still a mainstay 'script doctor' for major production companies.

During her next phase of writing, Kathaleen joined the Santa Barbara Screenwriter's Association and placed in several of their contests as well as working with William Stratton, a TV writer-producer for Movies of the Week.

She quit writing screenplays a couple years after graduation due to a divorce and having to raise two kids and work full time as a dental hygienist. The trips to meetings in LA and witnessing first-hand how nothing is for certain in Hollywood was not to her liking. She turned her creative time to visual art instead. She exhibited photography and pastels in local galleries, started a business known as Ojai Art Garden and became a member of Ojai's Art Counsel. Then she retired in 2005 and moved to Fayetteville, Georgia, to be closer to her parents and their old home place that predated the Civil War. Of course, it was also much cheaper to live in Georgia than California as an artist.

Since Fayette County, GA did not have an art center, she started one. That morphed into a huge center for creativity known as ArtWorks on the Square. Sadly she lost the building that housed ArtWorks when its owner entered bankruptcy during The Recession. But as they say, when one door closes, another opens. No longer the 24/7 director/owner of ArtWorks, she found she had all the interrupted time she needed to return to her passion screenwriting. This occured in 2014. Every script she wrote placed in numerous well known screenwriting contests.

Then in 2016 she was elected to the City Council of Fayetteville, GA. The City was just starting to reinvent its old downtown and her creative mind played a big part in that. Screenwriting time took a big hit, but she managed to keep at it. She lost her seat in a run-off for the next four years - which was fine with her because she wasn't exactly cut out to be a glad-hander. Now she's back to writing and painting.

Whether she’s out painting in a desert somewhere, or photographing something unique, or rewriting her latest script for the umpteenth time, she always produces noteworthy work.
