Rose Harlean is an Actress, Screenwriter, Filmmaker and Model.
Early life and education
Rose Harlean Tauran was born on July 4, 1992 in Montpellier, France to Philippe “Phil” Tauran, a fine-art photographer and former graphic designer and Annie Tauran (Née Dupouy), a real estate developer. She has a twin sister named Géromine. The family moved to Avignon, where Harlean would grow up until graduation, when she was five years old. There she attended painting workshops focused on the work of artists like Vincent Van Gogh and practiced fencing. She was raised Roman Catholic and was baptized. She is of Southern French and Northern Spain (Occitan, Catalan, Basque) descent. Her parents divorced when she was thirteen and her father later married an American schoolteacher and moved to Sequim, Washington. From this marriage, Harlean has two half-siblings named Tobias and Brontë.
As a child, Harlean was very shy and suffered from anxiety due to her existentialist inquiries. She grew fascinated by questions surrounding the big bang, evolution and the purpose of her existence. She discovered a way to deal with her shyness when her school organized a play where she portrayed a mouse. She decided she wanted to work in film after watching 8 femmes directed by Francois Ozon in theater at the age of nine. In 2007, she wrote, directed and starred in her first short film called The Lake House. Her father edited the film and she released it on youtube in 2009. She attended Collège Alphonse Tavan and graduated with a Baccalauréat in literature in 2010 at lycée René Char. She attended Avignon University to study modern language but dropped out after one semester and moved to Montpellier to study Film at Paul Valéry University. She started her transition after completing a licentiate degree in film studies and went on to graduate with her first year of her master's degree although she didn't submit her thesis (centered on the Depression trilogy by Lars von Trier) on the second year, resulting in her not earning the full degree. In 2013, she attended summer classes at the Seattle Film Institute.
Career
In 2009, Harlean started to audition as a background actress in feature films and television. She began appearing as an extra in various films, TV shows and commercials starting with the films Omar Killed me (2011), Pauline detective (2012) and the US movie Battle of the Year (2013) where some of the scenes were shot in Montpellier in 2011. In 2013, she directed and starred alongside her father in the short film Wild Horses which she shot during a road trip in Eastern Washington. She co-directed and acted in the short film Junior (2013) which premiered at the 67th Cannes Film Festival in the Short Film Corner category.
During this time, she became interested in LGTBQ advocacy and became a member of the organization SOS Homophobie. Alongside the organization, she protested for same-sex marriage and was present at the first official same-sex ceremony which took place in her hometown of Montpellier on 29th May, 2013. She co-directed the short film Orphans (2013) which dealt on the subject and premiered at the 68th Cannes Film Festival, also in the Short Film Corner category.
She recorded a four-track extended play accompanying the release of the short film Wild Horses in 2013 under the stage name Eden. In 2014, Harlean directed the music video for the single Language and words recorded by her stepmother Cally. She recorded a remix of the song adding her voice to the hook in 2015. This was followed in 2017 by an independently recorded extended play titled Aesthetics of Trying swiftly released on youtube and deleted soon afterwards, this time under her now legal name.
With a strong desire to act on stage, Harlean took summer classes at the Cours Florent in 2015. She joined theatre workshops and acted in plays such as Roberto Zucco by Bernard-Marie Koltès and The Dragon by Evgeny Schartz in which she portrayed the character of Elsa. Harlean came back to filmmaking in 2017 by writing, producing, directing, editing and starring in the Mystery-Drama short film Eternal Return (2017) which was shot in English. She appeared in the music video for the song Même Filles for the band Eskemo in 2019. During that time, Harlean started modeling and posed for such photographers as Étienne Clotis, Nath-Sakura, Émilie Pradier and Félix Barjou. She served as a monthly ambassador of the French lingerie brand Maison Louve in December 2019. Harlean moved to Biarritz, France and joined a local theatre troupe within le Théâtre des Chimères.
In August 2020, Rose Harlean published an open letter in the French magazine TĂŞtu to voice her hopes to see a better representation of trans people and lives in French cinema. She again voiced her opinion on the matter in January 2021 in the French magazine Les Inrockuptibles. This allowed her to gain in visibility. She continued appearing in bit parts in the feature films such as Rifkin's Festival (2020) by Woody Allen, as well as Waiting for Bojangles and Goliath in 2021. In January 2021, she worked for the first time with Netflix by voicing the French dub of the character ÇaÄźla, portrayed by Oksan BĂĽyĂĽk in the Turkish movie Paper Lives which premiered on Netflix in March 2021 and was well received by critics. Harlean then voiced the main character of Emma in the short film Wade's Room (2021). She wrote, co-directed and starred in the experimental short film Dead Palms in 2021 alongside Yannick Demilor. Harlean next appeared as the lead role in What About Us? (2022), a short film directed by Quentin Alberto and in Arcadia (2022) directed by AnayĂŻs Beljic.Â
