Meet Laura "TheSoulWriter" Poindexter, a courageous woman who had no other choice but to follow her dreams. Laura is a native New Yorker (Harlem) who has also lived in Baltimore, MD. and now resides in Atlanta, GA. Laura has always had a love for the Arts but she would have to experience some of the darker sides of life before arriving at her here and now.
In 2010, two years after the economic crash, Laura was no longer able to tread water and found herself drowning in financial and emotional debt. Despite her best efforts she was unable to recover. At her wits’ end and on the verge of a nervous breakdown she began ranting to God. This was not a plea for help, but an inquisition. Laura believed that her childhood alone should have qualified her for an exemption from any egregious adult woes; God was not convinced. Laura continued to rant and God decided to answer by responding with one word...WRITE. This was not the answer she was looking for, but it was most certainly a turning point.
Not knowing what to expect, she packed a suitcase and took a twenty-four hour bus ride from Baltimore to Atlanta. Arriving in a new city with a new dream, as a 50 year old untrained talent; she had her work cut out for her. In an industry where age, race and gender play a huge part in one's ability to succeed, the odds were stacked against her. With only $32.00 in her pocket, and no solid plan for success, what was she to do? Laura did what she has always done, she trusted her God and her gut. Merging her determination, focus, passion and wisdom with her life experiences she set out on a journey to reinvent herself.
At an age when most people are thinking about retiring Laura is just getting started. As an actress she has landed supporting and lead roles in movie shorts, feature length, independent films and web-series. She can also be found on Netflix in Killer Mike's “Trigger Warning” SE1/EP4 playing herself. Laura is a multi-award winning screenwriter, who also holds the title of People's Choice Screenwriter of the year from the International Christian Film and Music Festival-2020. Additionally, Laura is writing and producing her own content, as well as writing for other projects. Despite all that she has overcome and accomplished. She states that the greatest accomplishment of all is that her life is a continual inspiration to others.
