In January, 1940, Britain's civilian Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) added the first 8 women to its roster of ferry pilots. Their purpose was to ferry new aircraft from factories to RAF Maintenance Units then out to operational squadrons, thus freeing up young RAF pilots for combat. In July, 1941, they finally got their chance to fly fighters and bombers.
