The eight-sequence structure taught in this lab is used widely in the industry. The writers who live and breathe this structure are some of the most creative working writers as they instinctively understand the framework, allowing their minds to focus on the emotional journey of the characters and find innovative ways to tell their stories. Outlining is a crucial step in the development process when working with executives and representation, who often must approve an outline before the writer can start writing their script. 

Over eight sessions, you and a group of passionate screenwriters will dive deep into screenwriting structure, focusing on one sequence each week, and applying what you've learned to your script's professional outline throughout the lab. You'll cover world-building, character dimensionality, pacing techniques, and more along the way.

What You'll Learn

This course is designed to build your writing muscle. By the end of the 8-week course, you detailed outline of your screenplay or one-hour drama. Following the sequence method of outlining,

PRE-CLASS PREP

One-page synopsis of “personal-project-in-progress” movie or television project. Or choose a current television or film (preferably streaming) that is comparable to your project in progress and write a one-page synopsis.

Week 1 Sequence 1 (1-15 pages)

We begin with an Introduction of the story’s world.

Story/Character’s World: The mood and tone are set in the OPENING IMAGE (page 1). The main character may or may not be the focus depending on the genre and format.

This week we explore A 360-degree view of your character’s world. The dichotomy between the worlds of the heroine and adversary.

Week 3 – Sequence 3 (31-45 pages)

Now it is time to put the plot's game plan into action.

Establish ACT II Main Tension: Add a new “opening image” here; the image will set the tone for the journey of act two. The hero’s new plan to resolve the inciting incident takes shape. The hero will devise the plan based on their ordinary methods and understanding. Tensions are high in the first 5 pages of act two, “gear up” phase. The game plan must be big to journey through Act Two. All the hero needs to do is...

This week we’ll explore challenges for the hero and opportunities for the antagonist.

We’ll put each character to the test win the antagonist experiences victory, and the protagonist loses hope.

Obstacle: The villain is winning. The best moment where the antagonist appears to be winning, and the hero is losing. The protagonist hits the lowest point.

A: Stage 32 Next Level Classes are typically 90-minute broadcasts that take place online using a designated software program from Stage 32.

Q: Do I have to be located in a specific location?
A: No, you can participate from the comfort of your own home using your personal computer! If you attend a live online webinar, you will be able to communicate directly with your instructor during the class.

Q: What are the system requirements?
A: You will need to meet the following system requirements in order to run the webinar software: Windows 7 or later Mac OS X 10.9 (Mavericks) or later.
