Around the World: JAFF Market Spotlights Film Distribution Strategy Debate

JAFF (Jogja-Netpac Asian Film Festival)

The film industry in Indonesia seems to be struggling and the experience of filmmakers seems to be at odds with those who manage the industry.

Getting the film to be socially relevant, is not what I would mean by ‘social responsibility’. After all, who is to say what is ‘socially relevant’ to the cinema audience. I would say in this case, that human drama is always relevant to our humanity, but to state that “there’s always still time to make the issues relevant.” appears to be a bureaucrat's solution to a perceived problem.

“It’s a little bit too late,” Badalu said regarding filmmakers’ delayed distribution planning. “Some countries get the funding and it ensures the distribution of [more] films. If you think you want a proper distribution, you’ll need a film sales agent.” He noted that in Indonesia, cinemas typically control screen numbers and release dates.
