I've done theater productions in the past and absolutely love experimenting with practical effects. I guess I subscribe to the old school in that I want to make it as "real" as possible and not rely on CGI. But for the TV series I'm working on (Intergalactic Space Rangers -- check us out on Facebook) we are wanting to keep it old school, but incorporate some new school CGI techniques. I am wondering about which one, in your opinion, would you rather watch on TV? Keep in mind that the series will be presented in black and white. Thank you all for your help.

IMO every type of effects work is a valid option. It really shouldn't be a question of CGI vs. practical. It should be what sells this shot best, what maintains suspension of disbelief in the audience and keeps them immersed in the story. The goal is seamless integration and high production value. The bag of tricks should contain all possible tools, because at the end of the day its all about story. Practical is great when possible, given budget, safety and a myriad of other considerations. CGI is useful when it is too costly, impractical or otherwise impossible to achieve practically.
I use the technique that works best for the shot. Choice of technique may also be affected by budget or schedule restrictions.
