Animation : Mixed-Reality Productions by Vincent Lowe

Mixed-Reality Productions

...when we coined the term mixed-reality, we thought that animation using game engines (Machinima) was really going to be a thing. The results on that are mixed (no pun intended). But we have to admit that we've had a lot of fun making Be My Guest, a mixed-reality variety show. The animation is crude, but it's fast and cheap so we can try a lot of different things quickly. That's really our mission, 'to make a lot of content, swiftly and inexpensively with a focus on story, writing, and acting performances.' We're just getting up to speed on that, but as we achieve critical mass now, it looks like we're getting the chance to do it. This clip (Most Interesting Woman - http://youtu.be/bm32EAOMuwQ) was a hit with our audiences at the start of Season 2. Tonight (Dec 7, 6pm PST) we'll release another episode and she'll be back. We hope you'll watch us on Livestream as the episode premieres, but more than that... If you're someone who has good sketch comedy sitting around on your desk looking for a home, or if you're someone who can write it easily, if you're a musician who's had good responses from audiences and are looking for more, or if you're a voice actor who just needs someone to give you a chance and get you into published material ... if you're one of those folks, then this show was created for you. We've already had the pleasure of welcoming Lizzie Karr to the show. We've run a clip that features Raymund Aranda, and we're planning to roll segments that showcase writing and story concepts by other Stage 32 veterans. So give it a look and see what you think.

Agree on that you can do alot in animation using game Engines and it's fun, the tough part is to make the avatars "alive" and not mechanic. But it will develop, I'm sure. I do some stuff myself.

I agree CT, so far my avatars behave a bit robotic. I have the tools to do capture puppeteering, but I'm new at it and it looks clunky so far. I hope to have a grasp on it by the third episode. Vincent it looks like you used the Unreal game engine, what did you use?

James David Sullivan

What's she doing this weekend? My avatar just broke up with his girl-meme and...

I guess it's like any other animation style or craft, one needs to explore how the technique can be used, study motion and expression and all that...then I think this sort of gaming animation can be as good and useful as any other approach. Yes, my experience is also that mocap can still be a bit rough, the technique will develop there too, I'm sure. I find it useful to cut out sequences a lot. Anyway, fun to see your project.

You guys may be interested in my company, which targets exactly this: creating realistic 3D avatars, with accessories, including motion captures, compatibility with FaceShift and a Kinnect for ultra cheap motion captures, Maya rigs, and auto-generated lip sync animation through our webAPI in your own software. All at indie pricing too. I don't want to sound like I'm spamming, so I'll just leave it at that. You can learn more at my profile.

Thanks Blake, that is interesting information.
