Very thought provoking article. I agree with the article that there is no absolute mix for a skeleton crew and it's best handled on a film-by-film basis. I also think it's quite revealing about which areas/people seem to be the first on the "ignore" list considering their importance to an awesome finished product. In sum, although it's done (often and sometime successfully) it's tough working with a small crew.
