Screenwriting : Pilot written - what next? by Phil McNamara

Pilot written - what next?

Have written a pilot script for a TV comedy/mock-umentary. What is the best way of getting this seen by the right people? Or do I need to copyright it? (I am in the UK)

Eoin O'Sullivan

Hi Phil, It depends. If this is your first script, I'd recommend you get some sort of feedback etc on it, before you send it anywhere. You want your work to be in the absolute best shape possible, before you send it anywhere. You can use copyright.gov to register your work. You should also check out BBC writers room and screenplay competitions that cater for original TV formats. Happy Writers which are part of this site also have pitch sessions and classes on TV, check it out. Kind Regards, Eoin

Thanks Eoin, that's some really good advice. I have already got a few people in mind to read it first and will definitely look into what you wrote. I appreciate it

Orianna Morales

You still need to copyright it and yes, you want to get coverage. In the meantime, you can research companies that are looking for your genre. Lifetime put out a new show called Unreal mocking the bachelor/big brother shows.

Thanks all for your advice. I really do appreciate you taking the time to comment

Richard Willett

It's hard to get anything read these days, so I would also enter as many television writing competitions as you can, with a particular focus on those where the scripts are read by people actually working in the industry, or where at least the prize is that they'll read you. Good luck!

Sharon Sinclair

Hi Phil, I`m pretty much where you are now, still trying to get funding - but ever hopeful

David Levy

Rewrite it a few times. Get some input from friends and peers. Craft your series bible as well so you know your characters and where your series is headed.
