Acting : How soon is too soon to seek an agent? by Christian Hetrick

How soon is too soon to seek an agent?

Just curious to hear your thoughts on when is the time to begin seeking representation as an actor? Is it a waste of time to submit to agencies when you have little experience? Do you believe there is a magic number of time one has been acting/training or a magic number of projects before one begins submissions? I hear conflicting advice on this from a few people in the industry. So, what do you think? Thanks in advance!!

I'd say commercial agent ok right after taking a commercial class and getting commercial headshot. Theatrical agent search after 9 months to a year of being in class, getting experience in at least 3 projects (student/short/web) you've booked, and having at least 2 clips for your reel. No formula, but thats my quick 2 cents.

Thank you Chris for the insight. I'm currently in training for film and T.V. acting and only have theater experience with a little webseries roles. Maybe it's just my impatience! I just see so many getting shots at paying roles because of their agent. I, along with some other like-minded individuals, have taken matters in our own hands and are arranging an ensemble for shorts and a webseries of our own. Maybe I can take that and prove my abilities to get an agent or two. Thanks again!

I would say don't wait. It's gonna take you 6-9 months of submitting to agencies before they will even contact you back. And if you for some miracle one does call you in beforehand, kick some serious butt in their audition process and walk out feeling successful because you were called into an agency when most actors won't get that chance.
