Hi, my name's D'Arcy Grey, and I'm fanatical about movies and TV like the next guy . Because I have an cleric mix, and screenwriting is my joy, I want to promote this amazing idea for a second series of Banished, called Banished 2 (poss working title ). The BBC commissioned Banished , 19th c.period drama about true story, the life of Thomas Dames, a lad from Nottingham, England, trying to look after and stealing for his family, he gets caught and sent by sailing ship as a prisoner to live out 10 year sentence, for a young boy of 13 years, must have been daunting. The passage was not comfortable at all. We find Thomas in Australia, amongst adults, thieves, robbers, rapists, murders, the life is difficult, among these, he makes friends in the camp,he gets his food stolen by a bully inmate , Thomas near starves to death, until one night he murders the bully. After a while Thomas is given the offer of the post of hangman, with all the trimmings, not not realising his his best friend is first to be hung. The camp is full intrigue ,characters that have become hugely popular, and massed a cult following, with this series just being released on DID. But for reasons only known to the BBC, it has not commissioned, or likely to,as second. This to me is a huge mistake on their part, because a Banished 2,to my mind has the making of something great, and with actors like Russell Tovey (Looking, The History Boys, and and presently on stage in the Lyceum, Broadway, in Miller's 'A View From The Bridge ', to rave reviews), you are looking at an amazing series headed by Russell Tovey, heading a great cast, already in place, already and raring to go . The story further to be told involves a serial killer, murder, blackmail, and pandemonium, drunkenness, and all the characters showing their true colours, colours with Thomas fighting for his life in old age. This second series should be taken, already need needs to be told, the true story of a boy, who continuously fights for his life from his beginnings in Nottingham, England, to Sydney Australia. An amazing incredibly moving story, that needs telling.
But written with different characters it could be? ! Even though those names are of people who were real people, the BBC still owns that, and it being a true story, surely those names are in the public domain. How can names from 150 years ago belong to the BBC? Doesn't make sense really.
The story is completely different, as it's based on another story or part of that persons life. Title change is not a problem , characters, the plot line is totally different, so use same characters ,but change their personalities, the story will be different, it is a true story, you cannot change that, like the names. It's like someone making a movie about Elvis, real person and name, so Elvis personality, the character must be changed in in a real life story about him, slightly differently, but cannot use his personality, character in and about a movie called Elvis 2? That does not make sense. Sorry.
Of thanks for that, makes it much clearer, and it is a murky area area as you say.I understand, thanks for the advice, appreciate it. Blessings.
