They are out there, waiting, but it is not easy. I am in the same boat, but have had good success with self publishing. I wish you success and keep me posted.
The big five publishers have control of who gets on the book store shelves. Self publishing equalizes a bit and also ebooks. The most difficult part is marketing your book and expanding its touch. A literary agent is a needed part of the process.
While most film/TV talent agents typically do not welcome query letters, the publishing industry is different. Many publishing/lit agents accept unsolicited query letters. Their websites include "submissions" information. Good luck!
Hi Victor, you may want to contact Publishers Marketplace and ask if their "search" can be refined for your needs. Membership is only about $20/month, and you can cancel after a month so you're only out $20. I haven't been a member for a couple years. I used it to scout books, so I'm afraid I don't recall how effective their agent search function is. Otherwise I'd tell you for sure if it would work for your needs. Publishing agents almost always have websites, so if you all (not just Victor) want to do the legwork, you can Google and submit. A friend of a friend had incredible success and landed her top choice agent simply by querying. This woman is a lawyer who wrote a book (not in her field), and I believe 3 agents met her after she sent out query letters. Publishing agents are typically much more open-minded about new clients than "Hollywood" talent agents. Good luck!
Just remember, in this day and age, most authors are expected to be self-marketing constantly. Only authors with the sales of Stephen King, or a major literary prize, can expect much marketing support from agents or publishers. To be a new author and find serious representation is very rare. I'm not saying give up on it (as I did, for my serious novel), but just understand that's how the industry is.
Congratulations! I'm about to self-publish my first novel based on my feature screenplay, so I know the feeling. I see that this post is 4 years old -- hopefully you were able to get the agent & publisher, or have found success through self publishing!
Awesome! I'm still drafting my first novel and saving up for an editor. Love hearing about people self-publishing. How are you marketing your books? I'm going to self publish as well and have always been interested in how the marketing part works.
