Giraudoux, Beckett, Ionesco, Pinter, Shepard, Foreman? Early theater may have originated in rituals, early passion plays, but for decades in U.S. naturalism has been the major focus of most theater produced. Yet before the actors studio there were other styles of playwriting and performance besides 50's Naturlism. Verse plays, outside of Shakespeare have been another taboo. Yet Hamilton and Rap rhytms have perhaps in their modernism turned back the clock a notch. My first plays, produced by A.C.T. and later developed at the Public theater, were lingo plays. But that era was soon submerged, though still ascendent in Europe, which never embraced "Naturalism" and the well-made play formulas as the only form. Now i am quite excited to hear my new lingo play, THE WAPSHOT WHATEVER, in the Midtown Short Play festival. Below is info, including the first scene on my blog for this production. Take a look.
