Introduce Yourself : Rewrite, Rewrite, Rewrite by DeAnne Brown-Hirsch

Rewrite, Rewrite, Rewrite

Hey there! I'm DeAnne Brown-Hirsch and I'm in rewrite hell/heaven. It's all in the perspective, right? The contests give me deadlines. Currently have one week left to enter one of my screenplays into a pilot contest. I'm making adjustments based on some recent, valuable feedback and moving forward. Onward and upward. And sideways. Has anyone taken Hal Croasmun's Pro Series class? The alumni group seems valuable, but then again doesn't Stage 32 potentially serve the same purpose? What do you think???

Hey DeAnne, I personally don't bother with contests. My reasoning is that with 5-7000 entries on some of them, the odds are against me I would win, even with a great script. What I do instead is pay to have my scripts read by someone in the industry like Spec Scout, then I do a rewrite based on their comments. Granted, I'm not writing by committee, but I've found the critiques have helped see things I wouldn't have thought of. Then I pitch directly to producers through a service like Virtual Pitchfest. This is how I've gotten scripts read. Hope this helps!

Tawny -HI! Thank you. I usually use contests just as a way to finish a script or finish rewrites so that I have a deadline, otherwise I have a tough time scheduling writing in time. In other words, I'm a procrastinator who waits for the perfect block of time. It's worth the price of a contest to just get it done. I purchased a block of virtual pitch sessions and haven't used them yet. Did you get any instruction on pitching before you did it? Thanks again!

VP gives examples of pitches to give you an idea. One thing they have that other services don't, is more writing space to sell your script. A lot of other services only allow a logline. Also in Virtual Pitchfest the producers/agents, etc will sometimes give feedback and tell you they liked the pitch, even if they don't want to read it. VP also has a fast response. If you pitch today, within a couple days, you'll get a response so your script better be ready. At Greenlightmymovie, the response time is months, if ever (and they are more expensive, go figure.)
