Acting : The Actor-Producer by Tommy G. Kendrick

The Actor-Producer

After almost 40 years of working in front of the camera, I just wrapped production on the first project where I both acted and also produced. I was not the sole producer but found and helped develop the property, scouted locations, along with the Exec. Producer decided which line producer to hire, etc. To find out more about the project please visit our Facebook page at: www.somewhereshort.com I can't tell you what a different view it is from the other side of the camera. It was also quite empowering as an actor to have a hand in creating the kind of work I really want to do as an actor. So, my unsolicited advice is do not wait. The technology is available. The networking opportunities are here on sites like this to team up with writers, actors, producers and create opportunities for yourself. I am a union actor so this project was a SAG-AFTRA signatory short film. Our young line producer had never handled the signatory paperwork and had no trouble navigating those waters. The short film rep at S-A was always just an email or phone call away to answer questions. And I bugged them plenty myself, even though I'm a longtime member as there were things I needed clarified. So, fellow actors, PLEASE stop waiting for your agent or some casting director to call or email with a 'permission slip' to work in your own career. I can't over-state how good you will feel about yourself and how much confidence you will gain when you jump into the fire and take a hand in creating your own opportunities.

Agreed! The time is perfect to create your own projects & there's plenty of resources out there. Congrats!
