I'm writing my first screenplay. Craig Griffiths, my problem was on the dialogue and exposition. I've done a ton of research on the topics but could't quite figure out how to translate it into my writing. I reached out to Stacey Chehardy yesterday and she has really helped me tremendously. Being able to Skype with her and have her explain in terms I could understand really made a difference. At only $75 and such a quick turnaround I'm excited to implement what I've learned.
There are three bits of advice that helped me and I give to everyone. 1) read screenplays. You'll have to read a few. The first few will get you use to the form. Then suddenly you being to see things you haven't before. You'll begin to see the craft. How a writer achieves things. 2) start late and finish early. I cut 11 pages off the front of a script and it was better for it. Some people disagreed. They liked the character development. But I got into the meat of the story 11 pages sooner. I just finished a script and someone commented it ended quick. As soon as I was done, I stopped writing. 3) force scenes together and never repeat a theme. Once mum and dad hate each other. Showing a second fight doesn't make them hate each other more. If you have a second fight, use it to show something else, like a change in the power dynamic. Keep writing I throw away more than I keep. That is lesson number 4. I hope you love it as much as I do.
