What do you think makes a great Director's Reel?

I'm working on my Director's Reel. Curious to what you all think is most important, is it the acting, the style, the cinematography (and I know a DP is different than a Director), what do you think really wows you and makes an impressive reel?

If you have any examples of your work or others that you are comfortable sharing, that'd be great. Thanks!

Hi, Sonny. It depends on which area of the business you want to target. Creative concepts/style and acting are good bets.

Hi Sonny!

I agree with Tamara. It depends on what you're directing. A commercial directing reel will show production value in your commercial work as well as the brands or companies you've worked for. Same goes for music videos. Very similar to DP reels.

In regards to films, tv, web series, etc. it comes down to showing a few scenes that really show off your style. Most directors for these kinds of projects won't get necessarily hired just off of their reels. They get hired more so on references and credits.

I'm sorry, I should've clarified...great points...specifically for film/television. Features/Shorts, etc. So, more on the narrative end than the ad side if that makes sense.

Recognizeable faces are a huge plus.

What I look for in a Director's reel is a finished and polished product, beyond the technical audio, video, lighting, color balance... As the Director, you are responsible for the work of others. It's your job to make the actors look great so that they bring the characters to life. Scene blocking is very important as it relates to story. I like to see action/the story on every square inch of the screen. Show me your creative stuff.
