Just finished a 25 hour London to Sydney flight. I fell back on my favourite movies to keep me sane (Hell and High Water). What are your desert island movies? The movies you can always watch and enjoy. Why are they important to you?
Lawrence of Arabia (director's cut, Blu-ray) - the very definition of epic. Blade Runner - the dystopia that's cooler than the one we actually live in. Das Boot (uncut miniseries) - the ultimate WW2 sub movie. Every time I watch these I see something new.
The Pianist, Enemie at the Gates, Das Boot, Fight Club, Leon, Der Untergang, The Matrix, Pulp Fiction, Gladiator. Ben Hur, Interview with a Vampire, The Godfather, Once upon a time in the West, Gangs of New York, One flew over a cuckoo's nest, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Bourne Identity, Snatch.
AI Writer3000 has processed 521,436 films. Peter Pan is AI Writer3000's favorite film. AI Writer3000 wishes it could fly and be a boy, and be on t-shirts and lunch pails all around the world.
I enjoy watching, "Any Given Sunday." ~ It lets me live, vicariously through professional athletes and I enjoy the dysfunctional characters. They remind me of someone, I just can't put a name on it. "Crimson Tide." ~ I love Denzel's character. I think the tenacious will for him to fight through adversity (to do the right thing for MANY) in that film is excellent. It gives me hope and reminds me why it's important to be, of Service! Last but not least... My favorite, "Raiders of The Lost Arc." The first time I saw that movie (12 years old) it changed my life then and has continued to impact my creativity, today. It has everything. Hero, Adventure, Love, Enemies, Treasure, Friendship, History, Fantasy, and let's get real, it has a whip AND a monkey!
The Big Lebowski, Sling Blade, City Slickers...all great characters and writing. Tombstone, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Jackie Brown, Man on Fire, No Country for Old Men, The Birdcage, Primary Colors, and so on...
I also gravitate towards movies where the arguments between couples seem real, like The Story of Us and The Break Up. And War of the Roses. Fighting is often stupid and ugly.
Travis: don't know if you ever saw Blue Valentine, but that is a brilliant film about a fighting couple. Michelle Williams is such a great soulful actress. Two other great films both feature Elizabeth Taylor and are based on plays: Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
Man....the depths of those stories, and the dialogues.....what great writers and actors.
Sorry people neglected my own post, what a jerk. So many of these films have made want to watch them again. But the forgotten masterpiece is "The Ref". I actually have a VHS tape of this film and nothing to play it on. I couldn't bring myself to throw it away. I'll have to,find a DVD or digital copy.
I just watched The Ref. Great film. Sharp, funny, hard hitting dialogue. This is one of Denis Leary's best roles. And to my surprise it was produced by Don Simpson & Jerry Bruckheimer. Kevin Spacey, Judy Davis were compelling about a couple with marital issues. Travis you made my evening, My Chinese food tasted much better.
Hi Craig, glad your films were able to keep you sane! I think the films most important to us are the ones we can identify with or did during some point in our lives. Thanks for posting, enjoyed reading everyone's responses!

About 90% of Hitchcock and 75% of Huston and Wilder.
Fat City is pretty good. Anyone know when Fat City 2 is coming out?

Soapdish, Clue, Miller's Crossing, and those listed on my bio page (if they're still there). :) I have a long list of "favorite movies."
Movies that make me pause and watch when I'm cycling through the cable channels late at night:
Breakfast at Tiffanys
50 First Dates
Signs
Unbreakable
Any of the X Men movies
Sex & The City (first one)
American Beauty
American History X
Say anything
The Lost Boys (I have seen this movie well over 100x)
There are plenty more but those are a few I tend to watch over and over.

I also think The Ref is possibly the most under appreciated Christmas film ever.

The Ref isn't on Aussie Netflix. But it is amazing.
I have family who have fallen in love with The Ref. It has become our most quoted movie during the holidays.
