Anyone Know where I can find a "Debris Mortar" aka "Air Mortar"??
Hi, I need to find a ULB option for visual explosion effects (ie. ground debris, no flames required) and wonder if anyone has worked with and/or knows where I can locate a debris mortar (working on compressed air)... Thanks!
You can find lots of visual explosion effects on stock footage sites. Or you can request to use actual war footage from the various military branches. I've been given free use of such footage by the U.S. Marine Corps.
Few Producers use actual air actuated debris mortars any more (I've been on shoots where we used air cannons to flip cars). Actually blowing up your set makes retakes difficult and/or expensive but there are lots of green screen FX available - much easier on the budget and actors/crew's nerves
Are you still looking? I know several special efx people in Los Angeles. Rather than tell you not to do what you want to do I'll be happy to actually answer the question.
You can save some budget and make your own. We use colored light weight rubber asphalt debris which you can order from many sites. This allows for more accurate slower/easier tracking in post. They are really simple air compressor mortars. Get with a welder to make a hopper with the intake valve.
