A friend is being considered for a staff writer position. She doesn't currently have an agent. She realizes having an agent will help find her next gig, but she wants to see if she gets the position, since it would potentially help her land a better agent than she could right now.
If she gets hired before getting an agent, or even simultaneously, do agents still typically get a fee even though they weren't responsible for getting you that work? I know lots of actors and the answer varies among them and their agents, but neither of us are very familiar with agents in this capacity.

No, agents do not get a fee for any jobs the writer gets before they are a client.
Thanks! That's what I thought but didn't want to tell her the wrong thing.
And a working writer has a better chance at landing a rep just because they are actually working! It makes them a easier sell to potential employers.
