Screenwriting : Looking for Short Horror Stories by Michael Charron

Michael Charron

Looking for Short Horror Stories

Hi! My name is Michael, I'm a Writer/Director/Producer from Montreal. I started my own production company dedicated to Genre Cinema called From Outer Space Films. My partner and I are looking for a new project to develop and we want it to be an adaptation of a horror short story or, even better, a horror comics. If you guys have any suggestions or have an idea of a good place to start, that would be great! :)

Raymond Zachariasse

Ask someone here to write something :)

Michael Charron

Not a bad idea, but we are kinda looking for something fast. And since we're looking for comics and stuff like that, I think the best would be something that has already proven its effectiveness ;)

Matthew Corry

Have you tried comic book stores? I know it sounds obvious but you can find some really good works out there by generally unheard of comic book writers/artists who have work out on the market. There's quite a few out there advertising their works out via social media like Instagram, Twitter etc I don't know what compensation you're willing to pay but I'd say if you approach them with "exposure" it may not go down so well.

Miss Ruth Tagg

Dear Michael, I would highly recommend The Pan Book of Horror Stories, series 1 to 30 volumes [paperback]. Some of the stories have a comic twist. Have you seen the Amicus horror films of the 1970's? They made a compendium of short horror stories, based on comics, I believe. By the way, I have written the biography of actor Dennis Price and I am looking for some production company willing to make a film of his life, based on my book. Do you know anyone who maybe interested? Best wishes, Ruth.

Myron DeBose

I like how you think Raymond. Most lack your perspective.

Steven Harris Anzelowitz

Dan brings up an important question. How much are you paying?

Elisabeth Meier

So, you're looking for short scripts adapted from Horror short stories? I would write it, if you get the permission from the original authors.

Raymond Zachariasse

Michael, who says people on here aren't fast? And a lot of us read comics too :) Besides, if you do go for an adaption, be prepared to fork out a few thousand. I know since I'm a publisher of books :) In my network is a lady who publishes comics and they are cool. Point being, better be original. It probably cost less and for that you are at the right place :)

Raymond Zachariasse

Adrianne grayson, I believe. Cool comics and she is on stage32.

Michael Charron

Hey everyone, thanks for the responses! :) So, Matthew Corry , do you know any Online Comic Book stores? Miss Ruth Tagg thanks for the tip, I'll check it out! Concerning how much I'm paying, I'm not quite sure. We're not ready to make a move yet, since we are only checking out our options as of now. IF we find a horror story, we'll take that route. But if we don't find a story that really peaks our interest, then we'll simply do an original story. My partner and I are screenwriters, so we can write, that's not an issue at all. We're simply looking for the fun and challenge of adapting someone else's work to the big screen. Also, for some reasons, I'm much more interested in adapting a Comic Book, since so many short films adaptation of creepypastas and stuff like that have already been done. Raymond Zachariasse, thanks I'll check her work :)

Peter Roach

Dan the Man said it.. How much are you paying?

I have two; My New Dead Girlfriend (one set in Toronto - West Dundas) and another comedic horror sci-fi 'The Gift."

Oh add GST & HST. Ok I was pulling your leg there.

Michael Charron

As I said, we don't have any budget for now. We are only looking for ideas to start developing a project. Once we find something that we like, only then we'll start talking about budget. That's why we're looking for already existing material, and by material I mean Comic Books, Graphic Novel, etc. Not looking to buy a story yet, just looking for suggestions like the one Miss Ruth Tagg gave for instance :)

Raymond Zachariasse

But why would anyone give you an idea if you don't have the budget? I am a bit puzzled with that. That's why I posted :) Even if you adapt an excisting story, it would cost money. I placed some books out there for sales, so I know the prices (and I'm cheap). But Adrianne does have original material. It's all comics and they are cool. Looks a bi like Jessica Jones to me.

The point is, I think, you are asking screenwriters to give you an idea for work from someone else, not on here. All people here look for work :) So I think for an daption, you need to be asking in a comic forum.

Anyways, that is what I think. I'm not always the one with the right answers :) I do love to see your other work. I am not so much interested in comics, but your other work looks great.

Oh, Spawn and Candyman are nice ones I think.

Miss Ruth Tagg

Dear Michael - about the Pan Horror books - they mostly date from the early 1960's and I am thinking the authors of those stories are either very old or dead, so that obtaining copyright maybe easier. The actress Dulcie Gray wrote a cool story called "The Fur Brooch" but my favourites were "Under the flagstones" [about a family of vampires] and "Mrs. Fletcher's plum tree". I wish you all the best with your project.

Michael Charron

Raymond Zachariasse I thought about asking you guys on that particular lounge because I know that screenwriters are big readers :) Of course it costs money, but since the project is so far ahead, budget is really not a question as of yet. Basically, I want someone to recommend me Harry Potter so I can READ it first, see if I DO want to adapt it and only THEN think about buying the rights ;) But the comic book forum does sound like a good idea. Miss Ruth Tagg yes I checked it a bit. I does sound really promising I'll check it out.

Raymond Zachariasse

Yes, we read screenplays. Atleast I do :) But I did ready Harry Potter too. As with reading other work, I loved Charles de Lint. His Blue girl is great, but not so much comic :) The author friends I know love Sandman. Maybe that gives you a good starting point. But did you check out the gutenberg project? Really old stories without copyrights. I thought about that too.

Michael Charron

I didn't know about the Gutenberg Project! I'll check it out, thanks! :)

David Timber

I have a treasure trove of short horror stories.

Michael Charron

David Timber is there a way to read some of them? :) Did you publish them?

David Timber

I authored some and I work with other writers. material also. Some are published works and others are scripts unpublished. I will message you some info.

Michael Charron

Thanks!!

Gustavo Freitas

Edgar Allan Poe is always a good source of inspiration, and it's public domain.

Michael Charron

Gustavo Freitas For sure, I'm a big fan of his work.

DJ Wightman

Michael - I'm from Montreal (NDG)! I've written a feature film script - FARR - how do I contact you?

Michael Charron

Thanks DJ Wightman, but we are not looking for a finished script, we want to right an adaptation ourselves :)

Chad Stroman

I wouldn't recommend a direct adaptation but I would recommend a "twist" on a classic. For example "Get Out" was a little bit "Look Who's Coming to Dinner" mixed with "The Stepford Wives".

Maybe an Adaptation of "the Raven" but instead of a bird, it's a person in a bird costume all in one person's mind...oh wait, that was done as a drama called "Birdman".

There's a ton of inspiration in previous items like Twilight Zone, Tales from the Crypt and heck even Black Mirror. Now don't copy but look for inspiration there.

Michael Charron

YES! I've always enjoyed twists on classics :) I've thought about taking a story in the public domain and putting a modern twist on it. We'll look into that, thank you Chad Stroman
