Screenwriting : Permission needed for names? by Richard Buzzell

Richard Buzzell

Permission needed for names?

Is permission required to use a famous name in a work of fiction? For example, if I wanted to write the line," I hope to get adopted by the Kardashians.", would I need permission to use that name?

Sean Mannion

No. You'd need to be looking into it if you were depicting those people but a line like that doesn't need permission.

Dan MaxXx

No. The suits in charge of Errors & Omissions will handle it. Don’t worry.

David Speight

No. As long as it is fiction and you are not suggesting an endorsement from them in any way. To be safe, I'd avoid using the line in any promo material.

Gustavo Freitas

Who knows, it's even possible that the Kardashians do a cameo themselves! Lines like that are fine, just make sure your story doesn't lean on it. This kind of line could be easily replaced by the producers with the name of any other celebrity they represent or want to promote - if needed.

Amber Brown

Definitely not.
