I'm working on a script that would involve the characters, at some points, speaking in a non-English language or switching between English and non-English. I'm wondering about the proper way to format that, with the intention that the non-English lines between subtitled.
The script only involves this mixed use language in a few scenes.
Any thoughts on this? Would this be a good way to do it?
PAULO
Quiet! Quiet on the set!
(in Italian, subtitled, to crew)
Turn on the bubble machine!
SOPHIA
(in Italian, subtitled)
The bubble machine? Again? Really Paulo!
PAULO
(in Italian, subtitled, to crew)
More bubbles! More bubbles!
(in English to STEVE and SOPHIA)
Places ... happy! Look happy! You're in love!
If it's only in a couple of places (like your example), then I think you can use parentheticals to tell the actor how to deliver the line. If Paulo & Sophia are cast as hyperactive Italian characters, then their physical delivery may be all you need with no subtitles required. Just don't go overboard with the parentheticals.
