Screenwriting : American Film Market by Martin Reese

American Film Market

Is there a benefit to screenwriters attending the American Film Market? It's virtual this year, and much more affordable, but it seems to really be more for people with finished films.

Christiane Lange

I was wondering same, and thinking same.

Doug Nelson

Martin - you are correct.

Martin Reese

Thanks, Doug. I was intrigued, but didn't want to spend money that doesn't move the needle.

Neal Howard

If you think there is something to be gained information/education/observation wise you can consider. It never hurts to know as much about the industry and its various aspects as possible, but yes, it is a market for finished films.

Craig D Griffiths

I would love to attend the physical market. I think the virtual one would be good if you have some product to take with you. I have found virtual things not as productive for networking and making connections, that could just be me.

Martin Reese Writers who attend AFM - online or in Santa Monica - for the sole purpose of selling a script will be disappointed. If your focus is just transactional, you'll miss most of the benefits.

For producers and writers, AFM is about education (the sessions), marketplace intelligence (discovering what is working and what isn't) and most importantly making new connections. Our 2020 networking platform is amazing. Many attendees will make more new connection online this year than they would have in Santa Monica.

Thanks Jonathan Wolf.

You convinced me, Jonathan Wolf. I did more of a deep dive for AFM and I'm in. Lots of interesting educational sessions that are very applicable to what I'm doing now. Thanks again for reaching out. Just proof that when you ask a question on this site you never know who may answer.
