I have gone to film school twice, but I need a group to help me stay focused.I have a degree in writing and directing, but I'm still trying to find my way. I have some experience writing, but I could use a lot more.
London Screenwriters Festival is a great way to interact daily with other writers/artists and join both private and public zoom groups, EG Bob Shultz does Sunday morning writers room. LSF February starts Feb 5th. A one off month special. Later on in year main festival 2021 goes on whole year. (Used to be only September but since pandemic if you join annually goes on whole year.) You don’t need be in London, a lot of my buddies there are in USA. Maybe see you around! Also maybe find some groups here although I not found many zoom meets here unless it’s a one off.
The London Screenwriters Festival has amazing stuff to offer including access to hundreds of recorded sessions with great writers and producers as part of the delegate membership. Ive been to the festival every year and wouldn’t miss it.
What are you trying to accomplish? To write a script? Direct a film? Or make new contacts? In my humble opinion, the best thing to do is to set a goal and work until you make it a reality. Personally, my goal as a screenwriter is to ink a three picture deal for one of my original concepts. I've won several contests that act as milestones on my way towards that goal and made many friends along the way. Feel free to add me to your network.
Lena Waithe, Ava DuVernay, StartWith8Hollywood have started mentorships & fellowships for Talent in Front and behind Camera. I would do that than join a writer's group. Connect with people with jobs, "skin in the game."
We have an awesome group in The Writers' Room here at Stage 32. In addition to the official Stage 32 webinars and classes with Jason Mirch and guest execs, we've been doing Thursday night pitch practices, monthly table reads with actors helping out, Saturday or Sunday zoom café writing sessions, bi-weekly Monday night practice coverage, and we're even talking about a retreat now.
There is so much support, encouragement and great webinars on the Stage 32 platform. You can't go wrong with diving in. Definitely consider joining the Writer's Room, it's a cool group of people helping each other up the road. It's been a great vibe. Email Jason j.mirch@stage32.com and he will give you a free month in the writers room to dip a toe in. Welcome! See you in the lounges.
