Screenwriting : How do I approach an agent? by Robert DeVerger

How do I approach an agent?

I am in a position after much hard work that I can start looking for an agent and hopefully get my work in front of the right people. I don't know anyone in the industry so I'm going to have to do this the tried and true way of messaging, calling, and knocking on the doors of any possible agents, I can. I don't mind the hard work that I'm going to have to put in, but if I'm going to put forth that much effort, I have to make sure I have all other aspects buttoned up. I'm curious if anyone has any tips when trying to speak with an agent? Any ideas of where to start looking for one? I know this question is very basic and I feel like I should "know" the answer, but I am curious what success or lessons others have learned from this?

In another thread last week, I stated it's difficult for an unproduced screenwriter to find an agent that will rep your material. If you only have one script, it can be more difficult. However, if you're a glutton for rejection, you can send out queries to agents that you think might be interested in what you're doing. There are several lists of literary agents out on the internet or you can join IMDb pro and start searching for agents that list their contact info. I've included a list called The Hollywood Screenwriting Directory for you. Click on PDF file link:

Do your research on who you send material to. If you get 50 rejections and 3 that say send me your script, you're doing all right. If you are easily discouraged then don't try to secure an agent. You need to have thick skin.

Thank you very much, Phillip, for compiling that list. I have a few works, I can send out, I just need to find the right fit.
