Introduce Yourself : Fail EveryWeek-synopsis by Allen R. Nelson

Fail EveryWeek-synopsis

The first time I started writing scripts was about 4 years ago. I sent out 312 submission letters to companies, agents, small producers, directors, and I only got back 286 rejected mails. And to this day I still don’t know what happened to the other 26 mails!! I remember the numbers very well because things like that don’t happen everyday.

These days when somebody asks me if I have the stomach for rejection and all, I just can’t help but laugh and remember all those 286 replies of rejected mails.

I am currently trying to find the right agent for my book, and rejection? well, let’s say that people should actually ask me if I have the stomach for being accepted. But seriously, after all this time trying I can’t even think about giving up. There’s always somebody who’s gonna recognize your work. Just gotta keep looking, I guess.

Taylor C. Baker

It is actually impressive that of 312 submissions you got 286 responses! I often times don't get any response at all when I do open submissions to agencies/managers. Thank you for sharing and for having such an inspiring "keep going" attitude!

Kurt Patino

I admire your determination & fortitude, Allen! I counsel my clients through rejection all the time, but it's part of the process as you pursue success. Keep networking by taking classes, getting involved with writing groups, going to writing conferences and events, and meet as many people as you can. Referrals are gold in this business, so the more people you meet and correspond with, the more opportunity to be referred to someone important. I heard that the author who wrote "Chicken Soup For The Soul" was rejected hundreds of times just like you, and there are many more examples of successful authors having your same experience. Keep at it! Envision success! Believe in yourself!!

Karen "Kay" Ross

Hey, Allen R. Nelson! Wow, I just love that your rejection letters really started with a fantastic effort, though! That really says how much confidence and courage you have!

Since you're working on your book, I would highly recommend reaching out through the Authoring Lounge, maybe introduce your synopsis and ask for advice? https://www.stage32.com/lounge/playwriting

Also, as a concept artist, I'd LOVE for you to post in the Animation Lounge - I feel sure you'll meet like-minded creatives there as well! https://www.stage32.com/lounge/animation

Keep in mind that these lounges are like the VIP Filmmaker's Lounges at Film Festivals, so this is where you can meet the people doing the work, get advice on anything you're working on, and/or give back to those who may need advice. We're a very supportive and encouraging community! I think you'd also enjoy my intro blog post on how to engage with the Stage32 Community:

Enjoy exploring the lounges, and don't forget to comment and respond to others’ posts, too! It's the best way to really connect!

Thank you all!

Now something else about reaching out to people about your work, whether it’s an agent or producer who likes to read your writing, is to get noticed. Ms Baker, I found it best to get noticed and reached out to rather than reaching out yourself. Because when they come to you about your work that’s when the opportunity knocks.

Thanks Mr. Patino for your motivational reply!

And that’s amazing Ms. Ross. I’ll be sure to check out lounges more often. Sometimes I just forget that I even have a profile in here. Thank you for your suggestions!

Kirby Taylor

Your enthusiasm is contagious! Thank you for sharing your journey.

John Ellis

Great attitude, Allen R. Nelson! The lesson here is to believe in yourself. Don't look for validation from others.

Emile Nightshade

Wow! That's a lot of rejection emails!

There's a quote I saw online somewhere that read "You're never a loser until you quit trying." Your perseverance is nothing short of inspirational!

Roberta Griffin

Wow! And thank you for sharing your story. Your attitude is refreshing, to say the least. Thank you very much for sharing! :)
