Producing : Approaching Actors by Andrew Small

Approaching Actors

Just wondering about attaching talent to your script before you actually start the producing process. I have heard mixed opinions. Some people say "don't approach an actor before you have a producer or production company behind you." Others say, "if you get an actor attached, it's an easier way to get your film produced." Which is the most effective route to go? I look forward to your feedback.

The best answer to your question is that it depends on a lot of things. Each project is different.

How would you know your budget without an attached producer? How would you know how much to offer an actor without knowing the constraints of a budget? How would you know the producer would like the same actors you like? Yes, you can attach a name actor on your own, but it will likely be a Pay or Play deal which means you have to put up the actor's salary into an escrow account in advance, subject to his availability on a specific date.

I once lined up a name actor to play a comic role I felt he was perfect for. I was right, he loved my script so much that his wife said he couldn't stop laughing over it. But in order to actually attach him, I had to put (per pay or play) his salary into an escrow account plus 10% for his agent. When I had to delay my film past a specific date, he and his agent were legally free to walk away with thousands of my dollars, probably still laughing.

I am sorry you had to go through that, Erik. I guess a filmmaker must have access to their own entertainment attorney. I don’t know if that would have helped you out, but at least you would have had representation and some support. That sucks. Thanks for your comments regarding my theoretical question. Good luck with your future projects. I hope you have better experiences in the future. Andrew.

Pay or play keeps everyone on schedule. If you ask me, dont make features unless you got money to throw away, like a hobby. Make short films first, for the experience. So many folks talk a big game but they cant even produce a wedding video
