Introduce Yourself : Writer storyteller by Paul French

Paul French

Writer storyteller

These days my work is taking the hard journey down deep emotional rabbit holes. One story involves a young woman's attempt to learn the real reason for her brother's suicide, which leads her to sexual abuse in minor hockey. The other story is about two women who support each other as they live with spousal abuse. The younger woman is experiencing physical abuse, the older woman has been dealing with emotional abuse for decades. My goal with both scripts is to get people talking and provide some hope.

I feel ya, Paul French. Writing can feel a bit like bleeding on the page, and if you want your audience to feel, then you end up being the first to feel for your characters! Those are both great topics. What compelled you to write about them? Are you doing anything to check out of the subject when you walk away from the writing for the day/week? I personally like coloring and painting.

Kay, thank you for thinking of my mental health. Both subjects are extremely close to me. My mother continues to live the life of the older woman of the second story. My uncle was a sexually abusive minor league hockey scout. It has taken me years of therapy to be ready to tell these stories and that therapy will continue through the writing of both scripts and beyond. I chose to start these projects in football season because a good game can take me out of my head. Music is my other distraction and then there's my cat who can always get me moving.
