On Writing : Script Writing Nightmare by Janet Wise

Script Writing Nightmare

Since 2017, I have been writing and researching for my current script. I found that my writing and creative process was similar to what Richard Wright described in his intro to Black Boy (i.e., I continue to make associations until they all come together in enough of a seamless fit to thoroughly describe my idea). Now, a 10-minute Pre-Show Intro has become 30 pages....and I need to knock it off. I just keep finding more connections to make! Any ideas for how much is enough?

Stefano Pavone

You'll know when it's enough - when you've got enough to put them all together in a way that makes sense organically and doesn't seem forced. :)

Eric Sollars

The associations should come to a head near the end. Sometimes you can plan them or the story morphs that way. My stories usually morph, but I use all the associations that I started with They will mold the story at the end. Ask yourself where are the associations taking me? Don't be afraid to let the story morph. I had a story with road pot holes and at the end the antagonist drives into a large sink hole and dies. That's just an example.

Cannon Rosenau

I think being concise is more effective. Less is more. Show don't tell and all that. Trust the audience isn't stupid. You can sprinkle those associations through out and they will pick up on it and appreciate it and want more of it , therefore watching on the edge of their seats! Good luck on your project!

If you're in an early draft these are likely connections you need to make for YOURSELF in order to write the script. Worry about trimming it down and editing in the next draft. "The first draft is you telling yourself the story, the second draft is you telling the reader." =D Be sure to get industry-level feedback to address the balance of the acts when you're done, in the meantime--keep writing!

Tessa Shaffer : Thank you. I guess I knew from the git-go I was writing this for me; for my clarification and instruction; for my own edification. All of the "ah-ha!" moments, the connections--I just wanted to share that with our country, with America. The connections are still happening, and I'm wrestling with how to contain it all in the story. What you have given me is an affirmation to have faith in my creative process. Thank you for being further on the road and sharing that with me.

Yes, it sounds like it is all yet unfolding for you. When I was a full time writing coach, I was always amazed by the books in progress, mostly non-fiction but sometimes fiction inspired by life, would have an open ending and the writer would struggle--the answer was always "you haven't lived this part of the book yet, it's still being written." and maybe that applies here. Either way, Keep Writing! =D
