#MeToo Missed Us: Female Composers Speak Out

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/music-news/female-composers-metoo...!

Bit of a serious post today. This is one of the most important articles of the year for both men and women to read. I, like many other female and NB composers, have faced everything from good old fashioned sexism through to harassment, and we need to be talking about it more (as we also need to be talking about all of the other discrimination that is sadly still rife within film music).

For any female/NB composers who aren't already aware of Nomi's incredible work with the Female Composer Safety League (FCSL https://www.facebook.com/groups/3155162911249383) it's a really good group to join and get involved in whether you've personally experienced harassment or not. There's also the Alliance For Women Film Composers (AWFC) who offer a lot of support and community to their members.

And as an FYI for those in the UK- the article mentions the Musician's Union, but they're not really geared towards film composers so most are actually part of the Ivors Academy. Unfortunately the Ivors don't seem to have an equivalent programme at the moment. I'm thinking of asking them to consider setting one up. If anyone would like to join me in that feel free to DM.

James Dower thanks for being receptive to it and for spreading the message.

I'm shocked that some composers receive little to no credits and no royalties on the music they write. That should be inexcusable. And, that quote from Laura Karpman about being told that her music wasn't masculine enough just sounds ridiculous. We have a long way to go towards equality in the entertainment industry. I feel very lucky as a songwriter to be working with a male friend who I have known for six years and he has always treated me as an equal when it comes to the creativity process. We are just friends and he has never made me feel uncomfortable. Thanks so much for sharing such an important topic!
